A fat bike has very wide tyres, around 4–5 inches, that run at low pressure and float over snow, sand and mud where an ordinary bike sinks. It's a winter, beach and adventure bike, very stable and easy to ride, but heavier and slower on tarmac.

- the tyres and tubes, which cost more to replace than on a normal bike
- the hub standard, wider than usual, which matters if you want spare wheels
- the drivetrain: the chain shouldn't touch the tyre on the big sprockets
- the bearings, especially if the bike has been ridden on the beach, through salt or water
- on an electric fat bike: the battery and motor, as with any e-bike
