A city e-bike is a great replacement for the car over short distances: you avoid traffic, don't hunt for parking and climb hills without effort. Trekking models are designed for longer distances, with a rack, lights and mudguards, while folding ones fit in a car boot or a lift.

What to check before you buy

the motor: hub motor (cheaper, good on the flat) or mid-drive (Bosch, Shimano, Yamaha), more efficient on hills

How much does a used city e-bike cost?

The typical price on Biklo is £917. Models with a hub motor and a small battery are the most affordable, while trekking bikes with a Bosch or Shimano mid-drive motor and a big battery cost more.

How far does a city e-bike go?

It depends on the battery, the assist mode, your weight and the terrain: the same battery lasts much longer on the flat in eco mode than on hills in the strongest mode. Ask the seller how many kilometres it does now on their usual routes.

Can I leave my e-bike outside in winter?

It's better to remove the battery and keep it at room temperature, partially charged. Cold temporarily reduces range, and storing it in freezing conditions can degrade it.
