Before you buy a motor
- replacement motor: the exact generation and model must match the frame, battery and display
- conversion kit: front or rear hub, wheel diameter and the width of the fork or frame
- the voltage, for example 36 V or 48 V, the same as the battery and controller
- the mileage, noises, play in the spindle and any repairs
- the connectors and cables, which differ from one system to another
On public roads, a standard e-bike (pedelec) assists up to 25 km/h with a 250 W nominal motor; a more powerful kit can take it out of that category. Bosch has the most ads on Biklo, and for conversions you'll also find MXUS motors. Small motors are sent by courier or to a parcel locker, depending on the parcel size.

How much does an e-bike motor cost?
The typical price on Biklo is £100. A hub motor for a conversion is much cheaper than a replacement Bosch or Shimano mid-drive motor, which makes up a large part of an e-bike's price.
Hub motor or mid-drive for a conversion?
A hub motor is the easiest to fit: you swap the wheel and add the battery and controller. Mid-drive kits (Bafang, for example) climb better because they use the gears, but they're harder to fit and depend on the frame's bottom bracket.
What should I check on a used mid-drive motor?
Ask for the mileage or operating hours from the app, check whether the spindle has play and whether the motor makes noises under load. A diagnostic test at an authorised workshop also shows you the software version.
