New and used bike handlebars
The handlebar sets your position on the bike and your control in corners, so it's worth choosing carefully. On an MTB, width, rise and backsweep matter; on a road bike, width, drop and the shape of the bend.
What to check before you buy
- the clamp diameter, 31.8 mm or 35 mm, the same as the stem
- the material: aluminium or carbon; a carbon bar that has taken a hit or has deep scratches shouldn't be used
- the width: a wide bar can be cut down, a narrow one can't be made longer
- the stem and lever clamp areas: marks from overtightening
- on road bikes: integrated bar-stem combos and cable routing
Deity has the most handlebars on Biklo, followed by Kellys, Force, Contec and RFR, plus FSA, Ritchey, PRO, Syncros and Renthal. The handlebar is a safety-critical part: with a used one, ask for clear photos and whether it has been through a crash.
