Bike chainrings

The chainring is the front toothed ring, mounted on the crank arms. You replace it when the teeth are worn or when you want a different ratio: a smaller ring helps on climbs, a bigger one gives you speed. On modern MTBs, narrow-wide chainrings, with alternating wide and narrow teeth, hold the chain without a guide.

To make sure it fits

  • the mount: direct mount (different from brand to brand) or bolted to a specific BCD
  • the offset, especially on Boost frames, so the chainline is correct
  • the number of gears: the tooth profile differs between 11 and 12-speed
  • the shape: round or oval, which evens out your effort
  • wear: teeth sharpened like shark fins mean the ring needs replacing

SRAM and Shimano have the most chainrings on Biklo, along with FSA, Force, BBB and Fouriers. When you change the chainring, check the chain too, because a stretched one quickly wears out the new ring. Chainrings fit easily in a parcel locker.

Questions about chainrings

How much does a chainring cost?
The typical price on Biklo is £19. A bolted steel or aluminium chainring is cheap, while direct-mount or oval rings from specialist makers cost more.
What does BCD mean?
BCD (bolt circle diameter) is the diameter of the circle the chainring bolts sit on. The new chainring must have the same BCD and number of bolts as your cranks.
What chainring size should I choose?
On a single-ring MTB, 30–34 teeth are the most common: fewer teeth make climbs easier, more give you speed on the flat. On road bikes, the classic combinations are 50/34, 52/36 and 53/39.

How much do chainrings cost?

Most chainrings ads are priced between £12 and £35; the typical price is £19.

Frequently asked questions

How does protected payment work?
You pay online through Biklo, and the money only reaches the seller once the order is confirmed. That way you can buy chainrings from private sellers without sending money upfront to a stranger.
How do I receive my item?
By courier, with a shipping label generated automatically by Biklo; parcels that fit can also go to a parcel locker. If the seller is nearby, you can see the item and buy it in person.
How do I check a used item before buying it?
Message the seller in the chat: ask for close-up photos, ask about age, wear and servicing, and check their rating. Some sellers also accept price offers.
How do I sell chainrings on Biklo?
As a private seller you post an ad for free: add clear photos, an honest description and your price. Shops can create a business account for their whole range.
