Shimano, SRAM and Campagnolo shifters
The shifter pulls the cable that moves the chain, so it has to match the derailleur and the number of sprockets exactly. Here you'll find MTB trigger shifters, combined brake-shift levers for road bikes (STI, DoubleTap, Ergopower), twist shifters (grip shift) and electronic shifters.
Compatibility, step by step
- the number of gears: an 11-speed shifter won't work properly with a 12-speed cassette
- the brand: Shimano and SRAM pull cable differently, so as a rule they don't mix
- road and MTB shifters aren't always compatible, even within the same brand
- the handlebar mount: its own clamp, I-Spec, MatchMaker or integrated with the brake lever
- on road shifters: mechanical or hydraulic brakes and the caliper type
On a used shifter, check that every gear engages precisely and that the lever returns on its own. Shimano has the most ads on Biklo, followed by SRAM, Campagnolo, SunRace and Microshift. Shifters are small, so they usually go to a parcel locker.
