Fixie and singlespeed bikes
A fixie has a fixed gear: the pedals always turn with the wheel, so you can't coast and you can slow down through the pedals. A singlespeed also has one gear, but with a freewheel, like an ordinary bike. Both are simple, light and almost maintenance-free, perfect for the city.
What to check on a used fixie
- the rear hub: flip-flop (fixed on one side, free on the other) or fixed only
- the brakes: on public roads, fit at least one hand brake
- chain tension and the horizontal dropouts where the wheel is adjusted
- the chainring-to-sprocket ratio: a big one is fast on the flat but hard on climbs
- rust, because many fixies are converted old steel road bikes
On Biklo you'll find fixies and singlespeeds from Pegas, Dolan, Bianchi, Look, or built on classic steel frames. They're light, so they travel by courier without any hassle, and if the seller is in your city, you can try them first.
