Used and new road bikes
A road bike is built for tarmac: a light frame, drop handlebars, narrow tyres and an aerodynamic position. You choose one for long rides, training and racing; if you also want to ride dirt roads, a gravel bike will suit you better. Aluminium frames are affordable, while carbon brings lower weight and more comfort.
On a used road bike, check
- the carbon frame and fork: fine cracks near the stem, the bottom bracket and the fork ends
- the groupset (Shimano 105, Ultegra, Dura-Ace or SRAM Rival, Force, Red) and chain wear
- disc or rim brakes and, with rim brakes, wear on the rim braking surface
- the frame size, usually given in centimetres, and the stem length
- the crash history: damaged carbon can have cracks you can't see
On Biklo there are plenty of ads for Merida, Scott, Pinarello, Trek, Giant, Specialized and Canyon, plus brands such as Ridley, Wilier or Factor. With a carbon frame, ask for close-up photos and, if you can, see the bike in person before you pay.
