Used downhill and freeride bikes
A downhill bike is built for descending only: a dual-crown fork, a long-travel shock, long and low geometry and powerful brakes. You go up by chairlift or shuttle, not by pedalling. Freeride uses similar but more versatile bikes, for jumps and natural lines.
What to check on a used downhill bike
- the whole frame: cracks at the front welds, the shock mounts and the down tube
- play in the pivots and headset, after seasons of bike park riding
- the dual-crown fork: clean stanchions with no oil on them, recently serviced
- the wheels: bent rims, loose spokes, hubs with play
- whether the bike was raced or only ridden in the bike park, and how often
