A full-suspension bike has a fork at the front and a shock at the back, so it keeps the wheel glued to the ground over roots and rocks and tires you out less on long rides. Here you'll mostly find cross-country and trail models with moderate travel; for rough descents, check the enduro and downhill categories too.

What to check on a used full-suspension bike

pivot bearings and bushings: lift the rear wheel and feel for sideways play

the rear shock: a clean shaft, no oil leaks, and the date of the last service

the fork: stanchions free of scratches, no leaks, recently serviced

the rear triangle and shock mounts, where cracks appear most often

the frame size and whether the geometry suits the riding you want to do

Scott, Specialized, Cube, Cannondale and Merida have the most ads on Biklo, and a Rockrider full-suspension is the most sought-after budget option. The bike comes by courier, but if you want to try it, pick an ad in your city and buy it in person.

How much does a used full-suspension bike cost?

The typical price here is £977. Aluminium models with entry-level suspension cost much less than carbon ones with top-end suspension. Set some money aside for a suspension service too, if the seller has no proof of the last one.

Full suspension or hardtail?

A hardtail is lighter, cheaper and simpler to maintain, good for forest roads and smooth trails. Full suspension is worth it if you often ride technical trails or do long rides where comfort matters.

What maintenance does a full-suspension bike need?

On top of regular servicing, the fork and shock need periodic services (seals and oil), and the pivot bearings are replaced when play appears. Ask the seller what has been done and when.
